OVERVIEW
Chitwan National park, the UNESCO World natural heritage site, lies towards the southwestern part of Bagmati province in Chitwan district as Bharatpur as its district headquarter. It lies in the Terai region of Nepal. The National park was established in 1973 and granted the UNESCO world heritage site in 1984. Chitwan is a popular destination for higher education, health services and transportation among the Nepalese. It also has been one of the most popular destinations among foreign and domestic tourists in recent years.
Chitwan National Park has a lot to offer. 68 species of mammals are inhabited here among which the Bengal Tiger, Rhinoceros, Leopards, Elephants, Four horned antelopes are rare and protected animals. The vegetation here is Subtropical broadleaf forest with over 543 species of regular and migrant birds residing here. Sal trees cover 70% of the jungle. Over 700 species of Butterflies, insects and Moth have been recorded with 19 species of Snakes including King Cobra and Rock Python. The Narayani- Rapti rivers and Bishazari lake are home to over 113 spices of fish, Mugged crocodiles and Gharials, Starred tortoise and Monitor lizards.
The Balmiki dham, the place where sage Balmiki wrote the holy book Ramayana at the bank of Narayani river. The U- shaped Bishazari taal is another attraction here, Canoeing at the budi Rapti river allows you to witness the Crocodiles and wildlife around the river. Jungle walk, Jeep/ Elephant safari and the Elephant breeding center are other major attractions and activities here. The traditional culture and lifestyle of the Tharus, the indigenous around the jungle is another major allure of Chitwan.
ITINERARY

07.30 hrs: Pick up from the hotel.
The driver picks you up at your hotel. Finish your breakfast, get the necessities for the day and join the tour. -
08.00hrs: Begin the day with Canoeing at Budi Rapti river.
We’ll start our day with a canoe ride on the Budi Rapti river. It also is the way crossing the river to begin our jungle tour. It is highly probable to witness Mugged crocodiles, fish eating Gharials, other reptiles, fishes and birds around the river banks. -
09.00hrs: Jungle walks.
The jungle walk is a fantastic idea to get closer to nature, wildlife and biodiversity. We’ll be accompanied by a friendly and an experienced guide throughout. We may encounter Monkeys, Rhinos, various species of birds, deer, hares, etc. It highly depends on fate, what we see. The visitors usually find the walk fascinating and safe but as we are into the wild, we must be alert, aware and precautionary to avoid the attention of the wild animals. -
11.00hrs: A visit to the Elephant Breeding center.
Elephant breeding center is the major attraction here, as there are only two breeding centers of Elephant in the world. It is located 3 km from Sauraha, at the edge of Chitwan national park. One can plan visiting here during his/ her visit to Sauraha. Established in 1987 with 6 male and 14 female Elephants, it has played a significant role in preserving and growing the number of Elephants. As of 2015, there were 51 Elephants here counting the calves as well. Only 17 Elephants are kept in the breeding center and other are left in the jungle to perpetuate the wild’s glory. -
13.00hrs: Lunch at the hotel.
After visiting the breeding center, we will be back to the hotel for lunch. You could enjoy a nap if you’re tired to prepare yourself for the second half of the day tour. -
14.00hrs: Elephant safari for two hours.
We’ll leave the hotel for the Elephant safari tour; four persons are attended by one Elephant. The two hour long Safari tour follows the trail through the Budi Rapti river and enters the national park. One can witness the Bengal tiger, one horned Rhino, Wild boar, four horned Antelope, Wild Elephants, both resident and migrant birds and Crocodiles along the river bank. -
16.30hrs: Visit to the local Tharu community.
After finishing the Elephant safari, we’ll visit the local Tharu community. We could observe and witness the lifestyle, occupation and mud architecture of their pretty little houses. The Tharu villages are a small community of Tharus living closely to each other. The main occupation is fishing and boating. But the growth in tourism has made impacts on the old lifestyle and occupation.Today, people are engaged in farming and tourism as well. -
19.00hrs: Attend the Tharu cultural show and dinner.
The Tharu cultural shows usually organized at Sauraha and Meghauli have significant importance in Chitwan’s tourism. The Tharus, known as the “people of Jungle '' perform their traditional dances to entertain the tourists. Some famous Tharu dances like Mayur nach (Peacock dance), Danda nach (Stick dance), Aago nach (Fire dance) are the most famous and popular dances among the tourists. The cultural program lasts for 45 minutes and we’ll be followed by a traditional Tharu dinner plate. The most popluar are Dhikri (made out of molded rice flour dough into shapes of birds, fish, and animals steamed and eaten with chutney), Bagiya (Dhikri stuffed with boiled potato, lentils and spices), rice of Anadi chamal (Sticky rice), Pakua (barbecued pork), Fish and crabs plays an important role in the menu. Sidra (Dried fish), Ghongri (water snail), Anadhik jhor/ Jhaar is the alcoholic beverage of the Tharus, which is made by fermenting rice.
