OVERVIEW

When thinking of the country Nepal, we think of the Mountains, Religious pilgrimage sites, Adventures, wildlife and the History. But, a complete experience of traveling in Nepal has a lot more to offer. Nepal being rich in its ancient cultural arts and crafts, these could be reminiscence to the traveler if collected as souvenirs. These souvenirs are beautifully carved embracing the originality of the ancient time and it reflects too. These are usually handmade or made using traditional instruments and equipments, this is what makes it so significant. Shopping in Nepal is a unique experience as Tourist shopping here doesn’t involve shopping huge brands in a Mall or a Store unlike most country with Tourism as base of economy. Rather, small stalls are established by the locals to sell the handcrafts, the arts, paintings, and other souvenirs they produce. These local businesses are here for centuries which has been passed on to generations of families offering souvenirs to travelers from the ancient days till date.

The most significant shopping sites in Kathmandu are Basantapur durbar square, Ason, Bhotahity, Thamel, Patan durbar square and Bhaktapur durbar square. Among these, Ason and Bhotahity are the ancient and traditional market places offering general livelihood goods and the other shopping sites mostly offer souvenirs.
