OVERVIEW

Tilaurakot is a village, situated 24 kms west of Lumbini and is believed to be the Capital of the Sakyas, ancient Kapilvastu. It is believed that Buddha spent first 29 years of his life here in Tilaurakot. There are many ruins, remains and archeological findings that indicate the existence of ancient Kapilvastu. The major attractions here are the remains of the Tilaurakot palace, the fortification wall, the four gates, Kanthaka stupa, northeast pond, Samaidevi temple, metal workshop and ancient roads dating back to 6-7th century.  Nigrodharma Kudan (accommodation built for Buddha and his disciples by his father), today’s Gotihawa is the birthplace of Kakusandha Buddha which used to be known as Khemawati in the ancient days, Kanakmani Buddha was born in today’s Nigilhawa, today’s Sagarhawa is the place where the Shakyas were massacred. 

In this one day tour, we’ll cover all the historical and ancient sites of Tilaurakot and surrounding along with the visit to Devdaha and Ramgram.

ITINERARY

  • 08.00hrs: Pickup from the hotel and drive to Tilaurakot.

    The driver picks you up from the hotel. Get the necessary stuff for the day and join the tour. It takes approximately an hour to reach Tilaurakot.
  • 09.00hrs: Visit the Tilaurakot palace and surroundings.

    Tilaurakot, believed to be the capital of ancient Kapilvastu was rediscovered in 1899. The archeological remains features the ancient palace, located at an altitude secured by huge thick walls surrounded by Moats (ditches around the Palace walls for defensive purposes). Archeological and religious findings at Tilaurakot are the four gates, Kanthaka stupa, northeast pond, Samaidevi temple metal workshop and ancient roads dating back to 6-7th century. Nigrodharam Kudan, currently known as Kudan or Lori ki Kudan is the place where Lord Buddha met his father King Suddhodhan for the first time after enlightenment. Three stupas, the Nigrodharam pond and the ancient well, where the disciples’ used water from could still be seen here. Gotihawa, the birthplace of Kakusandha Buddha. The Ashoka pillar built by King Ashoka to mark his birth and Stupa could be found here. Nigilhawa, the birthplace of Kanakmani Buddha. Here we can find the ancient stone pillar erected by king Ashoka to mark his visit. Araurakot, is believed to be the place where Kanakmani Buddha lived, grew up and spent his married life. Sagarhawa, is believed to be the place where the noble Sakyas were massacred by king Virudhaka out of revenge. Sisaniya, a significant archeological site with an ancient mound. It is believed the Sakyas built a stupa and a Sangharama (Monastery) here.
  • 13.00hrs: Lunch break.

    After our Tilaurakot visit, we’ll have lunch in a local restaurant.
  • 14.00hrs: Visit to Devdaha.

    Devdaha is 60 kms east of Tilaurakot. The maternal hometown of Queen Mayadevi, the mother of Lord Buddha. It is also believed to be the hometown of Prajapati Gautami, the stepmother and Princess Yasodha, the spouse of Lord Buddha. It is also said that Lorad Buddha spent few years of his childhood in Devdaha with his maternal family. The devdaha pond is half kilometers north of the center, and it is believed that Lord Buddha used toi bath here during his visit to Devdaha.
  • 16.00hrs: Visit to Ramgram.

    Ramgram, is located 22 kms south east and has the only stupa where the sacred body relics of Lord Buddha is still in its original form. It is listed in the list of UNESCO tentative list of heritage in 1996.it is believed to be the only stupa not interfered by Kind Ashoka in the third century.
  • 18.00hrs: Drive back to the hotel.

    After the visit to Ramgram, we’ll drive back to our hotel.
