Trip Overview

Chandragiri hill is located 7 Km from Thankot, southwest of Kathmandu in Chandragiri Municipality. The peak is the second highest peak, i.e. 2551 meters above the sea level surrounding the valley only after Pulchoki hill. Chandragiri is majorly significant from its historic, religious, and natural aspect. The temple of Bhaleshor Mahadev stands on the top of the hill, which has a huge mythological belief. It is believed that the forehead of goddess Satidevi, the wife of Lord Shiva had fallen off at the site where the temple stands today when Lord Shiva was in the course of an insane mourning trip carrying the dead body of his beloved wife. The history of Nepal connects with this place, as King Prithivi Narayan Shah thought of conquering the valley standing at the top and watching the then prosperous valley from Chandragiri hill. Also, the folk tales say that the King meditated to Bhaleshor Mahadev with a wish of conquering the valley. Mahadev being amused by the King’s meditation granted him Victory.

Today, Chandragiri hill has been developed as one of the country’s most important tourist attractions for both domestic as well as international visitors. The hill is now being connected by two cable car stations transporting visitors up and down the hill. Chandragiri hill is also famous for short hikes to escape the hustle of the city and soak oneself in beauty of the nature for a short time, usually a day. The major attractions here are the cable car ride, the Valley viewpoint, Bhaleshor Mahadev temple, Playgrounds, Lawns and Meadows, Shopping arcades, the Resort.

Itenerary

Macchegaun, the beginning point of the hike in itself has a mythological significance. The pond of Macchegaun was dug to keep a fish that a villager called Manu found in a local river which enomorously grew and took an incarnation of Lord Bishnu. Manu established the temple of Macchenarayan in the midst of the pond. Macchegaun has existed ever since. It is 6 kms from Macchegaun to Chandragiri and might take approxly 1.5 hours to reach the peak.
The trail here follows the ancient trade route between the valley and India. However, the trail has been wrecked due to the recent motor way. This was the trail which the people, soldiers, traders and scholars visiting the valley used in the ancient days. The swerve trail goes through the dense green forest to the top. One can enjoy the view of the valley from the viewpoint and children can enjoy the plays in the grounds. Religious devotees also pay visit to the holy Bhaleshor Mahadev temple in the belief the lord grants their wishes. One can also enjoy the cable car ride here.
After admiring the view from the view tower, we’ll have lunch at a local Nepali restaura00nt. The traditional lunch depends upon the locality and seasons mostly in Nepal. As chandragiri being a newari community, we will give a try to an elaborated newari lunch cuisine.
Upon our return finishing the hike, we’ll experience the rope transport service of Chandragiri Cable car. The 2.5 km long ropeway takes it 10 minutes to reach the top offering close uninterrupted view of the hilly ranges, the ancient trade route between India and valley, the mountains and the valley.
After completing our trip, drive back to Kathmandu.
