Trip Overview

Also popularly known as Dal Bhat trek, Pikey peak trek is a fascinating route that allows you to avoid the rabble of the Everest Base Camp trek route while it persists the pristine views of landscapes of the Everest Region. The name Pikey depicts sky over nature and was named after the local Sherpa CLAN deity. Sherpa people, time and again, make the short trips to Pikey peak to hang the prayer flag on top and worship their deity.

Pikey peak trek route is a newly discovered and less explored trail that blends the benevolence of Sherpa culture, stunner natural landscapes, and tranquil forests to offer enduring memories of the trip. This route is entitled to offer you the best panoramic view of the majestic mountain range starting from Dhaulagiri in the west till Kanchenjunga in the east also including Everest and other nearby mountain peaks.

It is said that Sir Edmund Hillary highly praised the hill station of Pikey peak, and we will know why he did so, once we behold the sunrise view from this hilltop. Many people do not deny the fact that the view of Mt. Everest from Pikey Peak is one of the best ones can witness.

This trek route is fairly short and not many tourists are found here. However, the lodges and other facilities are up to the mark. If you want solitude and still witness the exquisiteness of the Everest region, this route might be a perfect match for you. You can complete this trek route in any season, throughout the year. However, we do not recommend you to trek this route during monsoon and winter seasons. Autumn (Sept. – Nov.) and spring (March-May) is the best time to complete this trek as you can the most out of this place regarding the beauty of the landscapes. We have offered a default itinerary of 10 days, but we can customize the trip for you if you want to either increase or decrease the number of days on the trip.

In order to reach the starting point of the trek, you can either choose to drive or fly. Trust me, anything you chose is going to be as adventurous as you can imagine.

Our Representative will be waiting for you at the airport and welcome you in our typical Nepali culture. Today we will discuss our trekking and make necessary preparations and we take a quick city tour of Kathmandu as well. After all the briefings regarding the trek and acquainting necessary permits, we will arrange a short trip to a few UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city such as Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambunath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa and so on. A quick stroll in the streets of Kathmandu and last minute gear shopping is a perfect thing to do in the evening.
The journey towards our trek route begins early morning from Kathmandu as we take a long drive of about 9 hours to reach a place called Dhap. We can start trekking today itself, but our trip being short does not require us to hasten up. Therefore we stay overnight in Dhap. The road trip from Kathmandu to Dhap is going to be an adventurous journey because of the crazy twists and turns and steepness of the road.
The first day of walking is going to be fairly easy, as we walk for about 4 hours only. We start trekking from a ridgeline that is at the south of Dhap, and as we trek further we start getting glances of mountains that we will get to see even more closely in the coming days of our trek. The peaks of Numbur Himal section of the Himalayan range is going to be one of the first ones that you will get to see today. After walking along the trail, the first village we reach will itself be the one where we stay overnight: Japre. This village is perched above a deep valley with nice views of Everest and Numbur Himal. A cute little gompa and stupa of this village catch your attention pretty easily. We stay overnight in Japre.
The trail climbs up to a grassy ridge at Bhulbhule, as we leave Japre. As soon as we leave Bhulbhule, the trail splits and we turn right to Pikey peak. Our trail will pass through some old yak houses, a long mani stone wall, and then contours the hillside below Taklung Danda. Our route today also includes a beautiful forested trail. If you are trekking in the spring, you can also see many rhododendrons which bloom to add up to the beauty of the trip. After we cross the forest, about 2 hours of walking will take us to Pikey peak base camp. We do not climb to Pikey peak today because the beauty of the place is much pronounced in the morning time during sunrise. Therefore, we stay overnight in Pikey peak base camp and sleep early so as to start our trek early tomorrow in order to reach the peak just before sunrise.
Starting our trek quite early in the morning, we gradually ascend to the summit which is covered with prayer flags. As soon as you reach the summit, your heart will ponder with joy and amusement. The view is just astonishing. The view of the sunrise and panoramic views from Annapurna to Kanchenjunga is just mesmerizing to watch. After spending some time in the peak, which is also the highest altitude of our trip, we start descending towards Loding. We follow a ridgeline that starts flat and then steepens as you enter the forest to Jase Bhanjyang, where breakfast will be waiting. We continue our walk down to Loding after having a delicious breakfast. The trail again passes through some steep sections in the forest. We stay overnight in Loding.
Our day starts as we head down the ridgeline for breakfast at Jase Bhanjyang. From Jase Bhanjyang we have a few options for the descent to Junbesi, and we choose a stunning shortcut trail that leaves the ridge shortly after Jase and descends steeply through spectacular old-growth forest to Taktor. This path also meets the Everest Base Camp trail coming from Jiri and you might also meet with few tourists in this path. From Taktor, we hike on a lovely trail for copule of hours to Junbesi, which is a traditional Sherpa village spaced at an altitude of 2390m and is a bassinet of Sherpa culture and architecture. Here we visit Thubtengchoeling monastery where we can have brief talks with people to learn more about Sherpa culture and traditions. We stay overnight in Junbesi.
A moderate day of trekking will take us from Junbesi to Taksindu. We have to cross the river at the bottom of the town and climb through the forest up to Salung, from where there are views of Mount Everest (8848m), Chamlang (7,319m), and Makalu (8,481m). Mesmerizing views out across the valley to Chiwong Monastery adds to the beauty. After some time we reach Ringmo, which is famous for its apple orchards and interesting apple products such as apple rakshi, cider and apple pie. Further climbing and descending, we finally reach Taksindu where we stay overnight.
Today we trek a beautiful path down to Phaplu through a forest. Another option is available where we hike up to Chiwong Gompa and descend to Phaplu. Chiwong Gompa monastery was founded in 1923and is famous for magnificent celebrations for the Mani Rimdu festival in autumn. We finally reach Phaplu and stay overnight somewhere close to Phaplu airport.
Usually, the flights to and from are completed in the early morning because of the unpredictable weather patterns in the afternoon. So we can expect to be in our hotel in Kathmandu by early afternoon.
