Trip Overview

Developed and Initiated by the “Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program”, the Tamang Heritage Trail is one of the easily accessible trek routes of Nepal close to Kathmandu Valley. This trekking route is a very short trip of about a week, and it allows the trekkers to discover the beauty of the majestic landscapes as well the culture of the Tamang people residing in this area. The trail offers a sweet blend of nature and human culture.

This trekking region also has a historical significance because the trail was used to connect this region to Tibet into barter salt and mountain goat with foodstuffs. The Tamang people of this region are greatly influenced by Tibetan culture and traditions, they being closer to Tibet. Therefore, you can expect to learn quite a lot of things about Tibetan culture while you go for a trek in this trail.

This trail is also famous for hot springs, and many believe that taking a bath in those springs will heal all of your diseases and make you a healthy and stronger person. The warm hospitality of local people and absolute pristine woodcarvings in their houses makes it a heart-warming trip for everyone. The route also consists of flat meadows, alpine terrain, and rhododendron forests. Moreover, you can expect to spot bears, leopards, red panda, and musk deer that are found in this region. In conclusion, it would not be unfair to say that the Tamang Heritage Trail trek route is a unique trail that offers natural sceneries, cultural knowledge, amazing flora and faunas, and whatnot. It can offer anything one expects to get from a trekking trail.

If you are seeking for a more challenging and longer trekking route in this region, this trip can be customized to be combined with the Classic Langtang Valley Trek, Langtang Helambu Trek, Langtang Gosainkunda Trek, Langtang Ganjala Pass Trek, and Ganesh Himal Trek.

As in most of the trekking trails in the country, the best season to do this route is also spring and autumn. However, this trail can be expedited in winter as well since the route does not fall in high altitude regions.

Today we will discuss our trekking and make necessary preparations and we take a quick city tour of Kathmandu as well. After all the briefings regarding the trek and acquainting necessary permits, we will arrange a short trip to a few UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city such as Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambunath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa and so on. A quick stroll in the streets of Kathmandu and last minute gear shopping is a perfect thing to do in the evening.
We drive north of Kathmandu for almost 7 hours to reach the entrance of the Langtang valley – Syabrubesi. Although this place is not so far from Kathmandu, the windy roads, its twists and turns, climb and descend makes it quite a long drive. The road is definitely difficult but mesmerizing at the same time. On your drive itself, you can see the mesmerizing views of the Annapurna range, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and other peaks of the Langtang region. The road mostly follows Trishuli River.
Today, we start our trek from a place which is the common starting point for the Langtang Valley trek and Gosainkunda Trek. However, we do not follow either of the routes. Taking up a different path, we climb for an hour and a half t reach a view point that provides us with the astounding view of Ganesh Himal, the Gosainkunda range and the Goljang Valley. After spending some time at this viewpoint we start descending to Goljang Valley which is also going to be our lunch stop. After lunch, we walk for about 3, through many villages, numerous Buddhist chortens and mani walls to reach Gatlang which is a beautiful Tamang village set on a hillside among terraced fields. We stay overnight in Gatlang.
The beginning of today’s trail is fairly easy as we descend to Thangbuchet. We stop at Thangbuchet for lunch. This place is located near Chilime village by the Bhotekoshi River. There is also Chilime hydropower dam situated in the Bhotekoshi River. After lunch, we climb up across a hanging bridge and continue until we reach Tatopani. The literal meaning of Tatopani is hot water. It is believed that bathing in these hot springs eradicates all the aches and pains of your bodies and even cures different diseases. We stay overnight in a Lodge in Tatopani.
This day is expected to be the longest trekking day of the trip and also the most exciting one as we climb the highest altitude of the trip. We start hiking up towards Nagthali which is situated at an altitude of 3,165 metres. This is the highest elevation we will be on our entire trip. This place was once used as a popular meditation centre for the local monks and priests. Nagthali lies in high open grassland and is the highest pass of the area. This place also provides serene panoramic views of snow-capped mountain peaks like Langtang, Lirung, Kerung, Ganesh Himal and Sanjen Ranges. After spending some time in the grassland we start descending to Thuman which is a heavily Tibetan influenced Tamang village. We stay overnight in a lodge in Thuman.
As we begin our trek, we walk along a flatter section of trail and then climb down to Timure. Here, we follow part of the old trade route to Tibet. It is also an interesting place to trek on as we are extremely close to Tibet. A trek of 3 hours can take across the border. We have our lunch at Timure. Then our trail continues to Bridim. Bridim is yet another Tamang village which is highly influenced by the Tibetan culture. We stay overnight in Bridim in home stay. This is also going to be an absolutely unforgettable experience because of the taste of the local food and the warm hospitality of the local Tamang people.
This is our last and shortest trekking day of the entire trip. We will follow an easy trail on the left side of the Bhotekoshi River. We pass through paddy and corn fields before finally descending at our campsite at Syabrubesi. We have our lunch at Syabrubesi and we utilize the rest of our day relaxing and exploring the small town. You can also find some handicraft shops where you can buy souvenirs to bring back home. We stay overnight in a lodge in Syabrubesi.
After 5 days of exploring the Tamang Heritage Trail, we head back towards Kathmandu along the same road. This time our mind would be pervaded of the views of the majestic landscapes and our heart would be warmed because of the hospitality we received in the last few days. We reach our hotel in Kathmandu where a farewell dinner party would be waiting for us.
